Electric bicycle accessories, upgrades and ideas for christmas gifts.

What do you buy for gifts for someone who already has an electric bike? It's not a possession that's easily topped. We know how it is when a friend or family member starts riding an e-bike - suddenly it's all they talk about and they're more interested in convincing you to buy one for yourself so that you can ride together, than they are about what they might want themselves.

Electric Bicycle Review - Peter and Phaedra's eZee Cadence in Marrickville

This is the next review in our electric bicycle long term reviews series.

Mural launch & welcome Maurice back Friday 6PM 14th September

Maurice will be riding in to Sydney tomorrow, stopping at the Opera House steps at 3:30PM and departing for our shop at 4PM. Anyone who would like to join him on the final leg of his trip, meet him there and ride back for drinks & to see the launch of a new mural on the side of our shop (flyer below!) at 6PM.

Cape York to Sydney electric bicycle ride!

Sydney is doing its best impression of winter and our response is to go on another classic eZee electric bicycle epic, from the tropical tip of Cape York, along the East Coast and back to the spiritual home of e-bikes in Australia - Glow Worm Bicycles in Sydney's innerwest.

Goodbye Lisa!

It's with great sadness that we announce Lisa's impending return to Denmark. We'll all miss her here at the shop, many of our customers will too and she'll even miss some of you. Lisa's last day will be this Friday the 22nd followed by drinks to celebrate everything she's brought to the workshop over the past year, from metal music to certified wheel building. Lisa will be leaving the shop a better place than she found it, particularly in the standard of mechanical work performed and we look forward to hearing about what she gets up to next.

We have an email list for e-biking news!

In case you didn't know, you can join our email list and get some sneak peaks of special deals, invites to e-bike events and general e-bike news delivered to your inbox. It's low volume (maybe once a month) and hopefully worth a read. You can sign up or just read the ones you've missed by clicking here.

I've just pasted below the latest email that went out. It's longer than the average and contains the following sections:

Waterproof jackets and pants for cycling and walking by Vaude - 50% off!

What a lovely week for cycling in the rain! Cycling in the rain has its advantages, like being motivated to ride faster to stay warmer or the exciting possibility of being able to ride through a waist deep puddle alongside Petersham TAFE. But best of all it's a chance to use your wet weather gear!

Car-free survival in Canberra - part two

Here's a better photo of the bike. The 20" (BMX sized) wheels keep the centre of gravity low and can support more weight than larger diameter wheels. The custom made steel frame is extra long to carry large cargo items and the cargo racks are part of the frame rather than bolt-on additions. This means the bike can carry enormous loads.

Car-free survival in Canberra - part one

It's been about 2 years since I started work at Glow Worm Bicycles when all we had was an office desk, a couple electric bikes and an absentee boss (Maurice). While Maurice was away in Hong Kong installing solar panels on a boat I gasped for breath in the deep end of the pool learning about electric bikes, bicycles, Sydney traffic and airplane-induced conversation pauses.

Support the Greenway - bicycle ride!

There's a ride to support the innerwest Greenway on Sunday February 26, starting at the bottom (western end, corner with Canal Rd) of Lilyfield Road, Lilyfi

No more occy strap distasters!

Workshop Glow Worm received a phone call last week:

"I was riding along and my derailleur broke. Can I bring my bike in?"

"Sure. Your derailleur hanger may have been broken, perhaps not actually the derailleur. Anyway, come on in"

Post Christmas Sale! Jan 7-9 - Cheap demo bicycles and e-bikes!

We're doing some renovations to the bike store and workshop before we open up on January 7 so it's as good a time as ever to sell some bicycles at special prices. Sydney Cargo Bike Picnic!

Sydney Cargo Bike Picnic!

The first Sydney Cargo Bike Picnic is this Sunday December 4 at Sydney Park. There's a family-friendly ride from Centennial Park starting at 11am over to Sydney Park or you can just meet us at Sydney Park.

Demo model clearance specials! Grab some e-bike bargains

We love our e-bikes, love showing them to people, love riding them and love riding to go to show people. We've ridden them to Melbourne, across Tasmania, to grab lunch every day and more. Then there's the hordes of people test riding them in our shop before they buy and the bikes they borrow when we are servicing their electric bikes. All in all this means we have a lot of demo models and it's time we get rid of some so that we can actually move around in the shop. The bikes listed below are in varying condition with imperfections noted and a suggested price.

Custom Electric Lowrider!

Over a year ago, I posted a blog entry about a lowrider I was restoring. After finding a 70s frame in someone's backyard I decided that it was time to make a custom lowrider with an electric difference...

Event: Himalayan e-bike trip presentation and meet Ching, eZeebike CEO at glow worm bicycles

We have two exciting pieces of news which will both be celebrated at a social event next Friday July 29 from 6:30pm at the shop, 117 Addison Road Marrickville. So what's the news?

Electric bike adventures in Nepal

Light up your ride - winter bicycle lighting

A good set of bicycle lights makes a big improvement to your bike riding experience in Sydney. Apart from the obvious motivation of being able to see where you are going, lights on bikes in Sydney are actually mostly necessary to let others see you. Our streets are choked with cars, most of them in a bad mood, driving and parking all over the place. One thing you can do to avoid uncomfortable situations is to become more visible from more angles on your bike.

Premium range of eZeebike electric bicycles coming to Australia

We're pleased to announce an expanded range of eZeebike models and component upgrades to end any doubts that we've got the country's best electric bicycles.

Wisper Bikes special deals

Anyone familiar with our approach to quality standards of electric bicycles will know that we don't spend much time preaching about bargain hunting for an important purchase like an e-bike. In fact, followers of our blog may have read our article railing against poor quality electric bicycles.

Electric Bicycles in the Sydney Morning Herald

Electric bicycles took page 3 in the Saturday SMH paper a couple weeks ago. It was an informative and very positive article by journalist Matthew Moore and gave the fledgling Sydney e-bike industry a much needed publicity boost. Millions of people in Sydney could benefit from an electric bike yet so many don't even know they exist.

Converting your bicycle to a more comfortable sit-up position

It's a fairly common occurrence in our bike shop that someone asks us rather sheepishly if we can make their bike more comfortable to ride by achieving a more upright seating position. This is usually done by bringing the handlebars higher up and closer to you. Don't be shy - people ask all the time and you're not alone in wanting this. Why's that? Well, Australia has been in the doldrums of sport cycling for decades.

Tasmanian central plateau e-bike tour (now with Video!)

Maurice and Kaitlin, glowworm staff, put their motors where their mouths are and enjoyed a cross-country electric bicycle tour from Hobart to Launceston over the Tasmanian central plateau.

No more flat tyres - guaranteed!

Tragic followers of our blog on e-bikes and bicycles may recall a previous story about punctures in bike tyres and how we should be avoiding them as a matter of pride as sentient beings. Basically the story is that many people cycle and get flat tyres and think it's a fact of life and put up with it or worse, eventually ditch the bicycle.

E-bike ride up Mount Wellington in Hobart, Tasmania

Hobart is known to be a hilly city, which puts cycling beyond the imagination, if not beyond the reach, of many of its inhabitants. Glow Worm Bicycles has two dealers in Hobart so it was a good excuse to go riding in Tasmania.

Cheap Electric Bicycles

This is a post about the low quality electric bicycles that seem to represent most of the market in Australia. In this context low quality refers to the e-bike itself (the product) as well as the service. We could write volumes on this topic but I'll try to stick to:

- what we mean by sub-standard e-bikes and why it is that Australia has so many

- what it's like to own a sub-standard e-bike and why you shouldn't purchase one - common misconceptions people have about bikes and quality/price

You've changed my life!

This is not a lie, yesterday one of our customers came into the shop and said "You guys have changed my life!" 2 hours later another of our customers came in to tell us the exact same thing! (Yes, they both meant it in a positive way and both were talking about life with an electric bike)

Flat tyres

Flat tyres are a common and irritating problem for cyclists. Why do we put up with it? I have a friend who was once charged $50 by a bike shop to fix a puncture! I know of a bike shop that charges $40 for the operation. With these stinging prices and the annoyance of being stranded God-knows-where everytime you run over a piece of glass I wonder why things aren't different. Motorists certainly don't put up with such frequent flat tyres, perhaps it's a sign that Australians are still not taking bicycles as a serious transport option. More >>

Electric Bicycles in the MS Gong Ride

The Sydney to Wollongong 'MS Gong Ride' is an annual cycling fundraiser for the MS Society, which has been supporting people living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) since 1956. It's a big event, raising several million dollars every year and attracting so many entrants that the ride felt it should cap rider numbers at 10,000.

Slogan competition - win a free bike service!

Well today my housemate came up with a slogan: "Take the ill out of the hill." It occurred to me that we at Glow Worm are badly in need of some good slogans, and are particularly bad at coming up with them. Comments are enabled, please provide us with some good slogans. If we use yours, you win a free mechanical service for your loved one (that's your bicycle, not your spouse).

Custom electric lowrider in the works

After finding a stylish 60s lowrider frame in a Canberra backyard, everything fell into place for an upgrade to Aiko's little electric fold-up. When this is finished Aiko will be riding on the most pimpin' metallic purple, re-upholstered banana seat electric 20" lowrider ever to cruise the Inner West streets.

Travelling 100% sustainable

Since I thought up the Electric Bicycle World Tour I was activelly looking to recharge bicycle batteries with a solar panel. I'm using 3x20W panels (120AUS$ each in a Jaycar shop) in series plus a Morningstar TS-45 TriStar 45 Charger Controller (215AUS$). So for a total of 575 AUS$ you can set up an ulimited source of energy for your bike and become 100% sustainable. Anybody now can do it, the technology is just there. You can ask Maurice for more info. Do not miss the following video!

The return of Electric Bike World Tour man Guim Valls Teruel

After a meditation retreat in the Blue Mountains, Barcelona world tourer Guim is feeling refreshed and more enthusiastic than ever to spread the word about electric bicycles. He will kindly make another presentation at the shop (117 Addison Rd Marrickville) from 6:30pm on Thursday the 20th of May. If the last presentation is anything to go by, it will be an entertaining evening with many questions and answers flying around between slides and film clips, and a general good time. read about Guim's solar-powered world tour at www.electricbicycleworldtour.com.

Glow Worm Bicycles shows Electric Bicycles at Canberra Markets

Canberra is the ideal place for bicycles and electric bicycles. The cycling is great, bike paths everywhere, cycle-friendly workplaces and fresh, clean air. However, the distances to travel are quite far compared to other cities of comparable population and the big streets means that getting there by car is usually quicker and more convenient. That's where electric bicycles come in - get there more quickly and over a long distance pedalling just as much or as little as you want.
