Cargo Bikes and Electric Cargo Bikes

electric cargo bike bakfietsWant to use your bike for more stuff, more often? Got a commercial need for your bicycle? Goods delivery, mobile ice-cream cart, pedal taxi? Or just want to use your bicycle the way people use their cars - to carry around anything you might have with you or find on the side of the road, like cases of beer, shopping, building materials and young children? Then you my friend, want a cargo bike. Browse our cargo bikes.

We have a range of electric and non-electric cargo bicycles in store such as the Yuba elMundo eZee conversion, the electrified Kona Ute, the e-bakfiets, the Larry Vs Harry Bullitt Cargo Bike from Denmark, electric tricycles and more.

Which one for you? That depends on what you want to carry, but here are some tips:

 - A 'cargo-equipped' regular bicycle can hold more than most people think. A decent rear rack can hold 25kg of stuff in pannier bags or in a crate at the back. A good handlebar basket will hold some stuff, but you have to steer the weight, so don't get carried away! And remember there are always trailers too. Some bicycles are more conducive to decking out with cargo stuff than others.

 - Long wheel based cargo bikes like the Yuba Mundo or Kona Ute feel the most like normal bicycles and will allow you to get around the fastest and be least likely to be inconvenienced by its size, for example when getting on trains or trying to get your bike up a ramp, between traffic obstacles or down the ramp on the Sydney Harbour Bridge. However, as the platform is high off the ground, heavy loads will make the bike hard to handle. It's also got all its weight above a large diameter wheel (700c) so it's not really designed to take a huge amount of weight. Therefore, this is the best bike if you infrequently have heavy loads and are more likely to have bulky items and want to be able to get around at full speed. At $1500 and $3000 for the electric version, it's very affordable too.

 - The electric tricycle by eZeebike isn't really a cargo bike in the sense that it's not built to take any more weight than you could put on a cargo-equipped bicycle. The difference is that it's easy to park the bike and load it with a modest amount of stuff. It's easy because the bike can't fall over and there is a lot of space. It's more about accessibility for the rider than the cargo.

 - If you're looking for the everything cargo bike than you can't go past the ones that have the load in the front. We have the Dutch bakfiets for $3150 or the Danish Bullitt in this range. The bakfiets has a factory fit e-bakfiets option. In a nutshell, the Bullitt has faster, lighter and sportier options and the bakfietsen are more Dutch - smooth, comfy, upright, steady and not for speed records. The Bullitt cargo bike is more expensive than the bakfiets (pictured above).

Happy riding around with a huge load of goodies!
